Day 3 Off to St John's
As much as we love Furby's Cove, we decided to head out and experience a little more of the Rock today. So we packed up the truck and headed off to St. John's to see the sights and to connect with one of Karl's old friends from the School Board.
The weather was nowhere near as bad as we expected from the forecast (the weather people are usually wrong anyway). We had a light misty rain at first, but as the day wore on, it settled down to just cloud. So, although we didn't have sunshine, it was still a good day to travel.
The huge rocky hills/mountains around Furby's Cove soon gave way to flatter land and lots of lakes, and the trees just went on and on. The forests in Newfoundland just never seem to end.
We saw sooo few cars on the first leg of the trip (Highway 360), maybe a dozen the whole way. But once we got to the TransCanada, it was the exact opposite, it took us 5 minutes to turn left out of a gas station!! Seems we weren't the only ones going to/from St. John's today.
We finally arrived in St. John's about 5 pm. and had to drive through the older part of the city to find our hotel. It just makes us smile to see houses painted in so many bright colours and standing upright on the steep hilly roads - can't wait to get out and explore the city tomorrow. I know that there is so much more to see.
Well folks, this is actually Karl's night to write the blog, so I'll hand the computer over to him to finish and tell you about our visit with Blair this evening.
After checking into the motel, we headed over to Blair's place in Flatrock, and were greeted with the warmest possible reception! It was so great to see him again after 8 years, get to know his family and his folks, and reminisce about our old school board days. Of course the friendship picked right up again as tho the 8 years had never passed.
His house, on a beautifully rugged lot, overlooks the ocean! Wow! We were treated to a marvellous home-made dinner by his mom, Maxine, whose house is on the next street, with their back yard adjoining Blair's. Also great to meet his dad, Barry. Dinner was of course fabulous, with baked appetizers, a fish main course (cod and salmon, pan-fried!), and peach cobbler dessert.
By the time we finished eating and chatting and I looked at my watch, it was almost 10:00 ... where does the time go?
Tomorrow is sight-seeing day!
