Day 7 Furby's Cove
It seems that we are falling into a pattern here in Furby's Cove. Now typically that would not be a good thing, but the peace and quiet lifestyle just feels right. Yes, there is television here, but as yet we haven't even turned it on. Lots to do without it, at least as visitors!
The weather today was mostly sunny and although it didn't hit 20 C., it felt warm! Instead of our walk up the road to the highway, today we decided to drive in to Harbour Breton and see if we could find some of the trails we were told about.
Our first stop was actually the dump to drop off a bag since it was along our way. Would you believe that the view from the edge of the dump overlooks a vista of mountains and water, something people around Kitchener would pay a fortune to see from the windows of their home!! But that's the thing about this part of Newfoundland, everything is like that. So I wonder why there aren't more people living in Newfoundland - I think they would be if the word got out..........
We drove just a few more miles and found Deadman's Trail - catchy name, huh? It is a boardwalk that circles a little lake and then midway also leads out to the ocean. The trail around the lake was a wooden boardwalk, so not hard to walk on, but beyond the beach, it seemed to climb up a gravel trail to a bluff. Since Karl was wearing sandals, we turned back after the beach, but not before I got a chance to do a bit of wading in the ocean!! Not as cold as I thought it would be!! We checked around for shells and rocks - took a few home. (Well why not - will have to weigh our suitcases before the flight back..... there is a weight restriction!)
We met several people on the walk and all of them stopped to talk for a bit. It is definitely true that Newfoundlanders are the most friendly people anywhere!! Really interesting to hear so many connections to Kitchener, Cambridge, and the Toronto area ... small world!! Just as we were leaving, a lady who had just pulled into the parking lot came over, yelled hello, and turned out it was Rita's sister Rosealea, wow!!
In Harbour Breton we had hoped to go to Gun Hill after lunch and thought pizza would be nice. We remembered going to the pizza restaurant with Arnie and Rita last summer (they have GF), but darned if we could find it!! And our GPS tried to lead us up a dirt trail!! Anyway, after touring Harbour Breton looking, we started asking and finally found it!!
After lunch we drove to Gun Hill, coincidentally just a little ways down the same road as the pizza place. We had spoken to a few men talking outside the store before we left and they gave us directions (we didn't trust our GPS any more). The story behind the hill is that when the settlement was new, someone would stand watch on the hill and shoot off the cannon if a ship was coming in, as a warning. Well great idea, but the hill was too steep and rough for Karl's sandals, sigh ... maybe next time.
We had a few errands to run in town and then we headed back to Furby's Cove to recoup. We are after all on vacation and there is always tomorrow.
The rest of the afternoon was quiet, just a bit of reading and another walk up the road to the highway (gotta keep Rita and her Fitbit on her toes, LOL). We then heard a heavy-duty rumbling in the distance and, as we topped the hill, found an excavator/digger approaching - it felt kind of like a monstrous invasion on our quiet get-away, but in fact, I am sure that it is part of the repair and road grading scheduled to happen this week. Oh well, there goes quiet!
Supper was cod (... surprised??) , the rest of yesterday's scallops (... surprised?) and salad made with lettuce frrom Rita's garden.
This evening we wandered out around the cove, watching the tide go out. Down at the beach, a few people have a bonfire going.......
Gotta love this place!!
